5 Reasons Why I'm Buying a PS3
Posted on October 4, 2006 by 5 Reasons why I'm buying a PS3So fair enough, the Sony have been getting a lot of flak lately over the PS3 for various different reasons, but I think a lot of people are writing it off too early.
There are plenty of different reasons why the PS3 will be a more-than worthwhile investment. People just seem to be focusing on the negatives. I've compiled a list of reasons why the PS32 will be a worthy purchase. Bear in mind I plan on owning all 3 next-gen consoles (I already have an Xbox 360).
5. Storage Medium
There's no denying that Blu-Ray is by far the superior format of those used by the next-gen consoles. With a storage medium over 5 times larger than any of thier competitors, the Playstation 3 is sure to have some pretty epic games, which is good news for RPG fans everywhere. Microsoft and Nintendo are both using the Standard DVD format, which can store a maximum of 9GB on a dual layered disc. This pails in comparison to Blu-Ray's 50GB capacity. The increased storage will allow more detail to be put in the textures and models, which is perfect for the new 'HD era'.
Ever since games where on magnetic tapes, storage mediums have improved from one generation to the next. From cartridges, to CDs, to DVDs. Blu-Ray is the next logical step in that progression. Because of Sony's chosen format, the PS3 also includes a next-gen movie player and will also play DVDs and CDs. At the begining of the HD era, where more and more storage space will be required, the storage medium will be crucial and Blu-Ray has a clear advantage.
4. Controller
Whether or not you believe the idea was stolen from Nintendo, the PS3 tilt-sensing controller is bound to have a positive impact on gameplay. New aspects of gameplay will be available, without foregoing a traditional controller as Nintendo have done. How many times have you seen people tilting a controller as they play to try and help that car get around the corner? It's intuitive to make these movements and relate them to on screen actions. A tilt sensitive controller means that new players will have something that's a lot easier to get to grips with and for more season gamers, there's still the tradional control method there to use.
As for the rest of the controller, Sony have gone with the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mentality. The classic Dual Shock layout remains, which I believe is one of the most comfortable controllers ever. There have been some slight revisions to the controller, such as more trigger-like shoulder buttons and finer analogue sensitivity. The batteries are also built-in to the controller, so unlike the Xbox 360 and Wii, you won't need to buy a separate battery pack or replace the batteries every few days. Even better, they'll be wireless this time around. I personally think all the next-gen consoles have great controllers, and Sony have made some great additions to thier tried and tested Dual Shock.
3. Raw Power
The Playstation 3 will be the most powerful console of this generaion. If you haven't seen what it's capable of, in MGS4 or FFXIII you should definately check out some screenshots. The console boasts a 3.2 GHz processor, and 256MB of RAM for each the processor and the graphics processing unit. Rest assured, you'll be getting some pretty slick graphics out of the machine.
Linux will be pre-installed on the PS3 hard drive, this will allow a lot of individually made content to appear on the PS3, similar to the homebrew content that's playable on the PSP.
Izumi Kawanishi:
"Because we have plans for having Linux on board [the PS3], we also recognize Linux programming activities… Other than game studios tied to official developer licenses, we'd like to see various individuals participate in content creation for the PS3."
A full web browser will also be included, along with the Playstation Network Platform, which will allow gamers to play online for free.
2. Value for Money
Despite the price tag, the PS3 is excellent value for money. sure, the console itself is $200 more expensive, but what's inside more than makes up for that:
Xbox 360 Standard: $399.99
Gold Xbox Live Subscription: At least $49.99 (per year)
Wireless Networking Adapter: $99.99
HD-DVD: $199.99
Total: $749.96
Playstation 3 standard: $599.99
PS3 Network Platform: Free
Wireless Networking Adapter: Built-in
Blu-ray player: Built-in
Total: $599.99
Plus you're getting a more poweful console, with a hard drive 3 times the size, a tilt-sensitive controller and card readers built in. So there's no doubt that the PS3 is great value for money.
1. The Games
The number one reason for buying any console is obviously the games. The PS2 built up great 3rd party support for Sony, and a lot of developers will be looking to carry over thier support to the PS3. With the 360 selling approximately 4 units in Japan and the Wii covering new ground and being less reliant on hardware, the PS3 will be the number one option for many Japanese developers.
With games like Gran Turismo 5, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Resident Evil 5, Ridge Racer 7 and Grand Theft Auto 4 already announced, does the PS3 really need anything else?

I'm staying with my PS2. Good games and fun, I want nothing more.
I will wait for the PS3 to have good games, as I did with the PS2.
And Xbox has always been technically superior to PS2, but not better at all, because gamers like me waited till the pc version of the games theyt wanted to play.
I don't buster and I have a job!
¿How much did Sony pay you for this? I'm considering creating a webpage to praise Sony, now that I see that they are buying opinions.
Lets see if any of you 360 gamers have anything to say.
As far as the article goes my reasons are as follows:
1) Cheap quality Blu-ray player
2) I met my minimum 3 games: Eight Days, FF13, White Knight Story and now LA.Noire. If these exclusive titles are as good as their video/hype I will not regret owning a PS3, but I'm not buying one until the first title comes out either.
3) The low end model gets HDMI options. I was really upset until this happened, now I'll not buy a high end version unless the built in add-ons besides the HardDrive are worth 100 bucks. IE if they bundle a remote, it might make sense to spend the extra 20 bucks difference to make up for the wi-fi connection, the remote, and the ps/ps2 card reader which are apparently the only differences now besides 60 gbs of space.
4) In the future, Japan will continue to give their best games to Sony, so if I want the next White Knight Story after WKS I have to own a PS3.
5) Hopefully it will remain region free so I can import cool games when SCEA makes a bonehead move and doesn't sponsor a translation.
+ can the peeps in the comments box please stop trying to say Blu-Ray is worse than DVD, it isn't, nor is the PS3 anything less than the most poweful of the three consoles. Argue against buying the PS3, but with real reasons.
If you want a FPS you need something else that crap xbox pad. Go and play a real console game bunch of morons.
If you really want whats best...just get a job, buy a 1080p and a PS3. Afterwards I am confident you guys will shut up. Meanwhile, we play xbox360.
The PS3 will outsell and outperform Microsoft just like it did in the previous console war.
It is a superior product. Period.
ps2 is a piece of shit compared with xbox
2 ps3 sucks
3 tilt controlls sucks
4 cell sucks
5 ps3 is a microwave
"you will truly understand the benifits of Blueray."
Sounds like Darth Vader
"I am your father".
Its way to early to say that, nobodies seen enough yet.
Killzone 3 looked fantastic but it wasn't even Gameplay (Thanks Sony once again).
And it not only about the graphics, a small example would be a console called Wii (hear of it?).
The only thing I looking out for now is GOW.
Thanks Sony again for delaying my 600 €uros until next year.
Good quality?? Excuse me?? you call IIS good quality?? You must be a total dork to put IIS over Unix.
It is a superior product. Period.
to be honest i am a games fan and i like all consoles but PS3 needs more games that will make me buy it. The 360 had a lot more killer games before launch than PS3. Lets look at PS3 games that will be released in about a year. I admit PS3 does have good physics though but some title are ones that would be possible on th 360
Lair - weve seen nothing special. i wont buy the console just for this
Motor Storm - interesting game that is probably one of the reasons ps3 will sell out when it should be a mid card game
Resistance - This game would flop on the 360.....360 fans admit it.....i wouldnt buy that shit...so why not put it on non FPS friendly PS3
Ridge Racer - Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiidge Racer....nuff sed
Final Fantasy - looks kinda good
Heavenly Sword - The Gears of War of PS3......but you'll finish this in a week
Gran Turismo HD - how many PS2 onwners do u know play online......yup 0 so fuck downloading cars n tracks
Now lets look at 360
Gears of War *****
Rainbow 6 *****
Smackdown vs Raw *****
Bioshock *****
Splinter Cell ***** + Game After
Saints Row ***** - shut up you havent even played this before
Halo 3 + Peter Jackson sequal
Huxley
Phantasy Star
Half Life 2
FEAR
PGR 4
Kane and Lynch
Pro Evo 6 HD
FIFA HD
PS3 fans critisised 360 for a crap launch line up, look at theirs
The games most of you guys mention, like GTA4, MGS4, FFXIII, DMC4, etc. etc. won't be out until late next year, when the price will likely drop on the system. So, just keep that in mind.
PS3 will have 512 megs of RAM. 256 dedicated to the 7 core processors and 256 to the GPU.
The 360 has 512 megs of RAM. Its RAM is unified meaning it can give as little or a lot of RAM to whichever process needs it most.
I never said it didn't. In fact, I'll probably end up buying about 80% of the games that you listed there. That's not really a reason why the PS3 isn't worth buying.
Neither is the Dreamcast er, uh, something.
http://ps3start.ytmnd.com/
Wii RULES
XBox sux
X360 sucks!
you can buy the console now :D no delay ,no lies :D
Anyone else see the irony in the above statement?
5, storage medium: did u know that compression technology was improving as well? HD DVD has VC-1 codec and has no problems running 1080p movies
Besides, HD DVD has twice as much movies as Blu-ray, so get over it
its not only about movies though. have you even heard about procedual synthesis? go and do some research. it is MS' new tech which will keep filesizes low
4, yea, it has motion sensing controller, but i no that eyetoy was tiring, and i wonder the percentage of all games which will take FULL advantage of that technology
rumble is missing, y? because sony r lazy
rumble makes games more realistic
rumble makes u involved
rumble is gd way of informing players of getting shot instead of just red screen on shooters
rumble is important in racing games, u no why
3, online for free??? so what? if the quality of service is not there, then free means nothing
Xbox live is only 11pence a day, and the quality and infrastructure of service is amazing
hav u forgotton how difficult it is to run servers? xbox live is quality because bill gates has a lot of money and can afford to invest a lot, and sony dont have much experience as ms on running servers at gd quality
web browser? i doubt people will prefer web on ps3 than pc cuz even though there will be mouse and keyboard support, because with windows internet interface is much easier
having sed that ps3 is the most powerful console, how many developers will get most out of ps3? ps3 looks good on paper, but in reality they aren't.
2, u r talking about costs of getting other stuff out of console, not about playing games
lets see what features are for gaming...
xbox 360: 280 + wireless = STILL 340 pounds with 11p a day for quality, organised and easy online gaming
ps3: 340 pounds without wireless and 425 pounds with wireless
with yet unknown online gaming....
1, do u think its only ps3 which has exclusives? Xbox 360 now has many decent titles:
Lost Planet : Extreme Condition
PES6 HD
FIFA 07 HD
Splinter cell double agent console HD
Splinter cell 5 for console
Grand Theft Auto IV with two exclusive contents to Xbox 360
Forza Motorsport series
Project Gotham Racing series
Halo series
Halo Wars
Gears of War
DeadRising
Smackdown vs RAW 2007 HD
Blue Dragon
Lost Odyssey
and many more...
Ever tried to estimate the cost of a 50GB game, take out a loan.
4.Controllers have evolved people, yet I'm supposed to be excited by tilt technology. How about making an erganomicaly designed controller instead of the same 12 year old design.
3. Raw power- I'll give this one to you, but..... the Xbox was more powerfull than the PS2 yet which do you prefer?
2. Tired of these $ comparisons . Advantage= depends on what you want. To make the 360 more expensive you have to be equiped with wireless capability at home, be willing to dish out 30 bucks for a DVD, and compare it to the low-end PS3 option. If it's "raw power" that gets you off, are you gonna get the 20G version?
1.The games. There is no argument here. Every console has different exclusives. Myself, I prefer Halo and Mario over Metal Gear but this has nothing to do with the systems. This boiles down to what games you want. If you want we can agree Nintendo and the box both suck, There.... but Zelda, Halo, Smash Bros., GRAW, Oblivion, ect..... don't.
PS3 X 599 = PURE SHIT...
PS3 X 599 = PURE SHIT...
Gold Xbox Live Subscription: At least $49.99 (per year)
Wireless Networking Adapter: $99.99 OPTIONAL if you dont want use lan built-in in the 360
HD-DVD: $199.99 OPTIONAL if you like watch hd-dvd movies
Total: $450 if you use the full live :D
Playstation 3 standard: $599.99
PS3 Network Platform: Free ??? mmm i dont think so
Wireless Networking Adapter: Built-in
Blu-ray player: Built-in
Total: $599.99
This site sucks , writers too :D trolls
The Cell processor is a pain but all new technology starts out that way. The full compacity wont be used becouse quite frankly we cant seem to find enough programs to use simotainiusly. This is where MMORPGs will be perfected.
As for the controller the rumble capability is a negative but your simply forgetting about other companies that will simpathy and make a controller that wont have the "SixAxis" in exchange for rumble capabilities. I'm sure Mad Catz has the rights to do this, escaping the lawsuit agianst Sony.
All in all their are 2 types of gamers, the casual and the hard core gamers. Hard Core gamers lie with Sony (due to thier extensive RPG's, over challenging games that were reviewed compared to Xbox). Casual gamers enjoy thier quick fix action and competitive game play (Hence the Sports games, fighting games and the addictive, "my hours playing Halo must match my skills," attitude.) Eaither system defines every gamer but to know what kind of gamer you are will define which system to buy.
I do agree with you on one point. You rated the games the most important point. Gaming is about the games, and if you want to play games that are released exclusively on the PS3, and it is worth whatever Sony is charging for the system, then get it.
This point is often lost in the Gamer Warz. I put a large portion of the blame for that on Sony, whose focus has been hardware and hype, and not the games. However, Sony doesn't make all the games, and certainly not the best. Third party devs will provide content that will "make" the system, as a console is nothing more than its library of games.
I would love to play Fatal Inertia (one of the less anticipated games for the PS3, especially compared to MGS, FF and Resistance), but it is not compelling enough to justify such a large purchase. The PS3 will have some good games exclusive to it. I hope that my gamer brethren and sisters who purchase it are happy with what they get.
So many people say that Sony games aren't appealing, but I find it very hard to agree with them. The numbers in game sell and console sell around the world speaks for itself.
The argument that 360 will have better graphics in the end doesn't mean much. The first XBOX was more powerful than the PS2, but it was the playstation brand that dominated.
The playstation is a grat deal when you look at the features you are getting.(Be honest with yourself for one minute)
Look at the price comparison up there, who is milking the consumer?
Saying that it is much more expensive to make games for the PS3 is true, but the games are still at the right price point so the consumer wins.
Oh, I can't progam for this CPU my code is too sloppy! I haven't heard of any Japanese developers say that it was too dificult. A learning curve maybe, but not impossible. American developer started the whining as expected.
As if 360 or Wii will have Crysis?
As if Crysis is the game of all games?
At the end of the day it boils down to preference. What games do you like playing. If you can't afford all the systems and can only choose one, what games can you not live without.
Without picking consoles here is my list:
!. Tekken
2. Soul Caliber
3. Virtua Fighter
4. Kingdom Hearts/ Final Fantasy
5. Ridge Racer
6. Gran Turismo
7.Metal Gear Solid
8.My entire library of PSOne and PS2 games.
9. Ninja Gaiden (now on PS3)
10.Halo/ GoW
11. Dead or...NO!!!!
See why my decision is easy.
I don't need any 360 fanbys to try to convince me that those games suck either.
Personal Preference.
Stop complaining
and make a choice.
2.Basic online for Ps3,free
wanna play games against other people, costs money people on either system.
1.Better games on ps3, not anymore, all I see is all of the big 3rd party devolopers warming there toes on the 360 fire
More power, thats yet to be seen, cutscenes off of the ps3 doesnt count, sorry
Blueray is better, sorry but someone hasnt read any reviews of blueray movies have they, let alone see one
Look people it comes down to this "sony" is going down hill there rep is badly hurt, anyone want a batt. from them?
They are swinging in the dark, the only hope they have is that their trailer trash fanboys will keep them a float, can they even afford one?
I would buy a PS3 next year if it wasnt for Sony's arrogance and insistance that they try to exploit the consumer. MS and Nintendo want to make money but Sony seems to think they can do anything to the consumer.
Do game designers want to make a game that can only go on a PS3 due to the size? That would be pretty insane for developer to do unless you are a 1st party developer. You want a game that can go on many platforms to make as much money as possible. The rumour also is that you will be able to cache a 2nd disc on an xbox360 hardrive, so capacity problem on DVD9 is near moot. I added a large generic USB hardrive to my xbox360 with ease. I dont want a HD player till the HD disc war is over, I dont need Sony to force me to choose theirs. I dont need their over-DRM'd disc crap.
The PSP has a larger screen and fast processor and etc etc but it is losing to the DS? why? The DS is inferior.
With such a great piece of hardware like the PS3 it's a shame that Sony has ruined it through PR. I hope they get their shites togther.
-Sony games are not fun are pretty graphics only
-Blueray like or not will die like the early Betamax
-Xbox 360 will have in the end of his life bether graphics
-Is much expensive make games for Ps3
-Developers dont get the maximum power of cell processors because they are too much complex (7 cores is madness)
-PC and Nintendo games are bether with more fun and are not for childrens (childrens like graphics adults like playability)
-And the most important will dont have the game Crysis!
sorry guys for the lost of US$ 599 (-;
4) Rumble support? No? Damn....
3) Cell processor, which also means additional development time and funds required to code for it. PS3 developers have already commented on what a pain the cell processor is.
2) Xbox 360 Standard: $399.99
Gold Xbox Live Subscription: At least $49.99 (per year)
Total: $449.98
I don't currently NEED wireless, nor do I currently NEED HD-DVD (or other nextgen storage format). The options are there for me to get them when I do NEED them, but for now I'll go buy games or accessories that I do want.
1) Say what you want about the games, but there's nothing that Sony's bragging about game wise that has impressed me over what the 360 is coming out with. All I know is that I love playing coop and both the 360 and the PS3 are getting Army of 2, Rainbow 6: Vegas but only the 360 is getting Gears of War.
I am not going to flame you, just point out some glaring errors of your post. The most blatant is that you cite to sparse or no authority for most of your assertions. Nor do you succeed in distinguishing the PS3 from its competitors. Having features is great, but how do they stack up against competitors, and are they worth the investment?
Failings of your post:
5. Storage medium
You claim that Blu-Ray is "by far the superior format", based on capacity alone. Care to address load issues? Price? Necessary data redundancy reducing useable capacity?
4. Controller
No mention of the lack of rumble? How about that built in battery, by the way? Does that mean that when the battery dies, you are out $40?
3. Raw Power
As authority for your claims, you cite a 3.2 GHz processor and 2x256 MB RAM. Xbox has a 3.2 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM. By your own terms, PS3 does NOT have the most raw power. How does GPU horsepower play here? This becomes pertinent for more than graphics when you consider the new uses (e.g. physics calculations) to which GPU's are being put.
2. Value For Money
Your position is premised upon the assumption that everyone purchasing a PS3 wants all of those features, and is able to use them. What about gamers without broadband, or a wireless modem/router? What about gamers that don't have an HDTV for Blu-Ray video playback? To these people, many of your cited features contain no "value." A faulty premise makes your statement moot.
1. The Games
It is here that you come closest to the mark, but miss it entirely. Third party developers have been fleeing the Sony camp, some making titles cross platform, some making titles exclusively for other platforms. Microsoft and Nintendo are picking up a lot of attention from developers and publishers that were wary of them last generation. And, to answer your question, yes, the PS3 does need something else. How about depth of genre? Resistance FOM is touted as the great shooter of the PS3, any others you care to mention? How about Third Person Shooters? Real time RPGs? Casual, arcade-style games? This is merely a symptom of Sony's library across game systems, very broad, very shallow.
Sony may have some franchises that are "must have's" for fans, but their library is not the strongest this generation, at least for the moment.
If you must have a fansite, do your research or dont post anything
What you not understanding is that developers are forced to keep their game within that size range. You think that Oblivion looked good? Imagine 10x the textures, world size, detail all something that is NOT POSSIBLE on a DVD.
When you play White Knight, FinalFantasyXIII, Resident Evil 5 etc you will truly understand the benifits of Blueray.

Then there's HD movie functionality. $200 more if you want to watch HD-DVDs on the 360. Sony built in Blu-ray movie playback for free.
It seems that Microsoft is just milking consumers and trying to make a profit off of all these 'optional' features which should really come standard with the system. They claim to be giving consumers choice, but only allow 360 owners to use $100 Microsoft hard drives and buy HD-DVD movies? What if we want bigger hard drives? Sony lets us put any kind of hard drive we want in our PS3s.
Microsoft only supports HD-DVD because they're on the HD-DVD association and Sony's on the Blu-ray Association.
Nicely done article. =)
